Understanding Gout

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis among men over age 40.

Gout is caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals (monosodium urate) into the joint fluid. An acute gout attack is characterized by pain, redness and inflammation of one or more joints, most typically the big toe.
