“Understanding, Controlling and Preventing Diabetes”
with Dr. Bernard Zinman, MDCM, FRCP (C), FACP Professor, University of Toronto,
Director, Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes, Mount Sinai Hospital, Torontoc
It’s been called the epidemic of the 21st century. It’s estimated by
the year 2025 there will be 300 million people with diabetes around
the world. More troubling is that you can walk around with diabetes
for years and not even know it. Unfortunately despite our best efforts,
diabetes can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease,
stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation. Studies have shown
that with optimal diabetes control including careful monitoring of glucose levels, the risk
of complication can be greatly reduced.
“Self monitoring allows one to adjust medication particularly insulin and allows you to
evaluate how successful you are at creating that balance between
medication insulin, food and exercise. Monitoring is closing the loop
of the therapy,” says Bernard Zinman.
For an in-depth look at understanding and preventing diabetes, we
speak with Dr. Zinman and hear from one of his patients.
